Devil May Cry 4 finally!

So, after a hard journey of trying to play this game with a fucked up thumb and arguing with funnyman over the game's quality, I finally finished DMC4 and I'm here to talk about it. I know that a lot of people out there have been dying for my review (ok, two people, actually...) but I'm not going to do it. Wait... what? Yup, that's right, what's the point of writing a long, descritive, accurate, well written review when that's already been done? Twice? Instead, I'm just going to point out some of the things I liked and disliked about the game and, of course, my final verdict.

Starting with the bad, this is a mix of flaws and nitpicking. Starting with the obvious, this is not Dante's game. Fortunately Nero is a pretty interesting character and he looks and acts a lot like Dante, so it's not Metal Gear Solid 2 all over again (don't know wtf am I talking about? In MGS for the most part instead of Snake, the main character of the series, you control some stupid androgynous punk named Raiden...). Still, there wasn't enough Dante for me, so I hope to see him more in an hypothetical DMC5.

Talking about Dante, we can't forget the infamous backtracking. As I said before, Capcom could've done better, but it's not as bad as one might think since playing with Dante is very different from playing with Nero and the replayed levels are always somewhat different from the 1st time and shorter, so it doesn't get boring.

To end my rambling I was somewhat pissed off by the absence of an explanation regarding Nero's origins. All we get is the information that (SPOILER) "he has the blood of Sparda". Well, that narrows it down a bit, meaning he has to be either Sparda's son or grand-son. Now, this is just my theory, but I'm more inclined to say he's his grand-son, specifically the son of Vergil. Before calling me crazy, think about it. Vergil was more friendly with his demonic side than Dante, which could somewhat explain Nero's arm, not to mention Nero was able to restore and wield Yamato. How the fuck could he do that without being a descendant of the sword's original owner? (SPOILER end)

Now, on to the good part! First, the graphics. This game is EPIC! REally, I can't stress this enough, this game is absolutely gorgeous! Pictures and videos don't make it justice, you really have to play it to see. The characters (and enemies) models, the detailed textures and effects, the artistic design of the levels, everything in this game looks stupendous...except for the fugly shadows, that is... but forget that, it really only shows on the forest level, and even that level is so great that you'll soon forget about it.

Now, about the gameplay, it's amazing how they managed to introduce new things without losing everything that made it great. I'm obviously talking about Nero's demonic arm that lets you grab enemies from a distance and smash them into the ground, which spectacular animations unique to each type of enemy (not to mention when you grab a boss). I have one complaint, though (wait, isn't this supposed to be about the good things of the game? Meh, fuck it...), Blue Rose, Nero's revolver, is fucking useless! Unlike Dante, Nero doesn't get new weapons, so we get stuck with this peashooter that does almost no damage even to the weakest enemies. Damn! Fortunately the devil arm kind of compensates for this, pulling the enemies closer to us so that we can slash them properly.

Well, what's left to say? Overall this is a game I really liked. It's fun, fast-paced, pretty long for an action-game and, above all, it's a worthy sequel to one of my favourite franchises. Oh, I almost forgot, most of you probably don't know how fond I am of the Devil May Cry series. Simply put, DMC was the very first game I played on a PS2 and basically the game that made me buy the system. Funny enough, I later managed to grab that exact copy of the game. I played it at a friend's house and he later sold it to me. After that I've played every DMC game, including the infamous DMC2 and the awesome prequel Dante's Awakening. Now I can proudly say that I've also played the latest entry in the franchise, and every fan of action games should play it too!

I do agree with you on Blue Rose for the most part, except when you upgrade to charge shot 3, that shit can be pretty potent! :)

Nice review!

A question: which fucking gun as ever been useful in dmc? For me, in the third one, I think I used them just to do a litlle variation in the gameplay...

Well, I still haven't got my ps2... and im now looking towards right, and seeing my dmc 4 copy... shit I think I will spent all night long playing the game tomorow, or else, if I get a pS2, I will spent all night long playing the first one. Yep, that's right, if I get a PS2 tomorrow, I will finish both games in the weekend!

Thanks for crediting my blog.

I don't know why people are griping about the lack of Dante and the introduction of Nero. Playing as Dante for the entire game wouldn't have made the game that much better. It would have only been a slight upgrade.

By the way blackhole. Devil 4 is not for the PS2. I just thought I would let you know that.

Definitely looks goo, I'll give you that...

The Sports Satirist disse...

I am presuming you meant to say good gnome? Yes, it is good but not great.

blackh0le69 disse...

funnyman, I said the first one...

But I still have not gotten a PS2, so I will start playing DMC 4 tonight :D

The Sports Satirist disse...

Oh, I see. Going back and playing Devil 1 is not all that great nowadays.

blackh0le69 disse...

Err... I played only the first batlle between nero and dante now. The game doesnt looks as quite as good as I hoped for now.

Don't judge after playing for 5 minutes, keep on playing ;)

I played mission two now. Damn, that secret mission took me 20 tries to complete!

Its just of me or the red orbs are still damn hard to catch? I explored the whole level, and only got 78%.

The boss is "cute" and fun, but he's to easy... I'm only using one slash combo now and I beat him on the first try, and im playing devil hunter, no Human pussy shit. HARDCORE mauhauahuah

PS: Is there anytime in the game where it gets to "nerdcore", like Ninja Gaiden?

The Sports Satirist disse...

What is your definition of nerdcore? In terms of gameplay, Ninja Gaiden Sigma is a better game than Devil 4 (if that is what you mean).

blackh0le69 disse...

Nerdcore is hard as fuck. if you cant pass DMC 3 with a usual controller, im not sure if you can go through Ninja Gaiden.

The Sports Satirist disse...

I disagree with that. You don't need a turbo controller to beat Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

blackh0le69 disse...

Hmm.. probably sigma is easier than the one on Xbox then. Like special edition of dmc 3.

The Sports Satirist disse...

The degree of difficulty on Ninja Gaiden Sigman and Ninja Gaiden Black are identical.

NGB was a bitch on hard.

And blackhole, you seem insistent to diss this game. Devil Hunter isn't hard...they didn't intend it to be as hard as DMC3 since so many people were bitching.

Son of Sparda is a bit harder than DH, but not by much. I'm looking forward to playing DMD! :)

blackh0le69 disse...

diss = not like?... LOOl

Biggest Dante fan in the planet here! :D

And i actually think the game's easy, i've died 1 time per mission now (sixth one).

The Sports Satirist disse...

Devil 4 is just barely more arduous than Devil 2. In Devil 3, the creatures just flat out cheated.

nice analysis nebacha, but this game is still way down on my "to play" list...
