Turok afterthoughts

So, I just finished Turok, and let me tell you, this game was a blast to the very end. Being quite long for a FPS (can last from 8 to 12 hours, depending on the gamer's skill) I was afraid it would get repetitive, but fortunately that was not the case. There are little twists in the gameplay here and there and the levels are so varied that you'll hardly get bored. From ambushing a convoy of enemy troops, to shooting down helicopters, to escape from the jungle at night with only a knife and a bow after a fight with a giant T-Rex, it's all there, and it's all awesome.

Really, I'm having trouble expressing what I felt while playing (and after finishing) this game, but thrust me, this is not just your run of the mill shooter, this is really a great game that unfortunately was a little underrated by the press (the opinions of the gamers seem more positive).

It has it's issues, thought, and I don't want to fool anyone, so here's a few. As I said before the game is bloody difficult, but with a little perseverance and a change of tactics every battle can be won. This is partly due to the total absence of assisted aim. If this is not that bad with regular weapons, try to nail a headshot with the bow and you'll see just how insanely hard that is. Another thing I hated was the achievements. I usually don't care much about them, since they're basically just an e-dick to show off to people, but I really can't understand why, in a game that focus on the single-player campaign, whose multi-player mode was just an afterthought, 2/3 or more of the achievements are exclusive to the online mode.

Still, despite these minor flaws, this is one hell of a game, and I loved every minute of it (ok, except for the minutes I was dying). If you like dinosaurs and you're looking for a different FPS, this is the game for you.

By the way, on a side note, I just got Devil May Cry 4, but unfortunately I can't play it properly right now. Yesterday, while cleaning my knives (I have two pocket knives my dad bought me while he was working in France and later in Spain) I cut myself on the right thumb and, not only it obviously hurts when I touch something, I'm afraid the cut will reopen if I mash buttons like mad while playing DMC. I hope it heals soon, cause I can't wait to play that game!

Devil May Cry is not a button mashing game :P

Imagine what would happen if you played God of War now?

eheh

PS: I love god of war, but Devil May Cry combat system it's just... BETTER.

It's not brainless button mashing, but, between using the sword, the gun, the devil bringer and jumping, you need to mash buttons like mad.

Junlee disse...

Oh that sucks! Hope it gets better real soon...I think you'll love that game! :)

Yupi, I have my special edition :D

But I wont play it... well at least while im able to resist to the temptation.

I bought Devil May Cry this week, but i dont have PS2 and im still looking for someone to borough me one.

NebachadnezzaR disse...

I couldn't resist the temptation, I'm already at the castle, stuck in the torture room puzzle... The bad news is my cut reopened a little, damn! :/

It healed a lot over the last night, I hope it does the same tonight. See ya'll tomorrow!

Probably the day i get the PS2 from someone, I will have the game already finished... :D

I can always just pass through the game skipping the cutscenes, and then after playing the first, see them like a movie... or play it again!

Ok. I'm definitely getting my PC some dinos. Yep.

Buy a turbo controller, so you won't have to mash the buttons.

NebachadnezzaR disse...

Good for you gnome! Don't forget to tell us all what you think of the game once you play it.

funnyman, but mashing buttons is half the fun :D

blackh0le69 disse...

Gnome, are you getting free dinos? I still dont think we should get Payed dinos into our gaming machines.

NebachadnezzaR disse...

Oh, but we should, blackhole! Otherwise, how will we get more dinos in the future? Cause I definitely want Propaganda games to make more dinos

The degree of difficulty for Devil 1 and Devil 3 made it so that the only way I was able to beat the game was with a turbo controller. I didn't use a turbo controller for Devil 4 because I don't feel like spending money on a PS3 or 360 controller.

Don't fret about cutting yourself neba. Cut off your ring finger, and you can be a true Assassin like Altair.

It's funny actually that, despite hating hard games and liking easier ones that don't require much skill/patience, I'm probably the only gamer in the world that thinks the DMC games are not that hard.

They're not easy by any means, but hard... I don't know if I'm a natural when it comes to these type of games, but I didn't found them hard. Challenging, yes, but not hard.

And so far DMC4 on human mode, even with my "handicap", is fucking easy. Every boss I fought till now (I just reached mission 6) was beaten at the first try with more than half of my energy bar intact.
Fucking easy compared to DMC3.

blackh0le69 disse...

I mean, I think i've this discusson with neba before. But now, im on his side.

DMC 3 is not hard... it's just a game that needs to be played with focus and intelligence. As I said, I love God of War, but there, in the easiest difficult, you can roll through the whole game with the same 2 or 3 combos... impossible to do in DMC.

Still, it's not that hard, the special edition easy mode, it's actually, easy.

Junlee disse...

DMC3 just had a steep ass learning curve...it threw you right there in the mix with a shit load of baddies! The Virgil fights were absolutely awesome!

And you're playing on Human neb? Devil Hunter wasn't too terribly hard, so I can't imagine how easy Human is! XD

I'm on mission 15 or 16 in Son of Sparda mode right now...my goal is to finally attempt and beat DMD mode!

blackh0le69 disse...

Yep, Vergil fights were definitly the highest point of DMC 3.

The Sports Satirist disse...

I lost track of the number of times I died in Devil 3, but the game does get easier as you progress. Especially when you get that weapon that freezes opponents and the guitar.

Junlee disse...

Yeah the farthest I went on DMC3 was Hard. But I must say, Virgil 3 was SO epic!

blackh0le69 disse...

I only managed hard in the special edition, which is normal on the normal one.

I did not use that weapon who freezes opponents that much, but the two swords of the dogs, and the guitar were really helpful.

Junlee disse...

I remember those two swords you get from those two bastards (hated those guys!)...I loved those things!

They particularly awesome for air combos!

The Sports Satirist disse...

If you perfectly nail the button presses correctly, then you could execute this wicked combo move with those swords. It reminded me of Ninja Gaiden Sigma. The guitar was incredible when you are surrounded by weaker foes. It was an awful weapon to use for boss fights. The later part of the game was when that freeze weapon is helpful. Honestly, I was only able to perform the combo maneuvers with my turbo controller for both weapons. The standard PS2 controller never worked well for me.

blackh0le69 disse...

I never used a turbo controller lol I dont even know what it is for.

The Sports Satirist disse...

The premise behind the turbo controller is simple. Instead of rapidly pressing the buttons, you hold the buttons down (hence the name turbo).

fatherkrishna disse...

wow! have I been away that long? All this discussion! I'll be getting me a piece of Turok when I see a cheap copy.

As for DMC4, I need to play 1, 2 and 3 first...

NebachadnezzaR disse...

You can skip 2... :/

fatherkrishna disse...

I've got 2! LOL!
