Oldboy remake

Please God, no...

Apparently Spielberg is interested in making a remake of the 2003 Korean film Oldboy (one of my favourite asian movies, next to the Japanese epic Battle Royale). Now, the question is, why? Why the fuck would they do that? For me the only remakes worth doing are those of old movies who relied heavily on special effects that were still very "primitive" (sorry, couldn't think of a better word) at the time, thus enhancing the original experience. King Kong is the first example that comes to mind. But this? What's the point? It's a recent film and a story-driven one, it's still as fresh nowadays as it was when it was released. So, what are they trying to do? "Americanize" it? Ruining it would be a better expression...

At least Steven is thinking of a good actor for the main role, Will Smith, who is nowadays one of my favourite actors due to his awesome acting in I Am Legend and Hancock, but still, it's going to feel strange watching him playing the role of this guy:

LOL @ Will Smith playing that dude!

He is a really good actor though. I didn't think he was that great until recently. He was awesome in I Am Legend, and ya know, I have yet to see The Pursuit of Happyness, which he was supposed to be really good in too.

It's going to be the Grudge and the Ring all over again.
Well at least it's Spielberg as well as Will Smith.
Well it might be in good hands. As long as Spielberg doesn't add any Aliens into the mix. I still can't believe his done that to Indiana Jones.

They should NOT (I repeat...) NOT remake Oldboy. That film would lose all it's charm if they went and slapped Hollywood style cliche's and cinematography all over it. They should NOT remake this film at all.

Ok, that's pure heresy. And -unless something really radical happens- another unbearable Spielberg film. Oh dear...

Agreed to a point... But Scorcese's remake of Infernal Affairs as the Departed actually trumped it's predecessor... At least it equals it...

plus if the original has a great plot and storyline, why not bring it to a wider audience? There will always be those who seek out the original after watching the re-make.

Not saying this will though...

Oldboy is a great movie, and should be left alone for a decade or so.

Then, when people had mostly forgotten it, a remake would be welcome.
